Let's start with the iconic Robert Stace 'Clarifoil' front laminated picture sleeve, as it is without doubt one of the most recognisable images of the Mod era.
When this album was released it was an instant classic and consequently was taken to parties a lot and played to death or scratched. This is one of those much loved & much partied copies.
The sleeve on the UK original was like many others released at the time, front laminated only. This meant that the back was just exposed paper. This laminate was all important for protecting the sleeve against spills, smudges and dirt in general and it did a great job, but we could never understand why sleeves weren't laminated all over?!
All text remains clearly legible, including along the spine, the rear print is nice with just a little discoloration & age yellowing. There looks to have been some writing on the back next to and around the tracklisting. A past owner for some unknown reason, has covered over most of this in a white correction fluid, and also looks like they tried to remove some of the text as there are a couple of spots of paper loss.
All be told, this would still make a great copy for framing.
The labels are classic black Brunswick with striking silver print and deep groove. You can certainly see by the multitude of spindle marks around the centre hole on both sides that this copy has seen action.
However, the vinyl is surprisingly in a really nice condition, easy reaching a VG+ grading, with just the odd light hairlight or surface scuff.
With mint (or as near as you can get to it these days) copies going for in excess of a thousand pounds, this could be a very cheap alternative for display on the wall [or some more Mod parties].
This is truly a remarkable album, having pretty much cemented the end of the Mod scene & showed the signs for what would be the way forward for sixties popular music.
As a historical artefact, this copy was THERE. It wasn't owned by Billy No Mates or a serious vinyl collector, but by a Mod who liked to party, and it shows.
As a centrepiece for a Mod Scene display, this copy has no equal. At this price, you can actually afford to do it too.
Wrecked but rare ? Certainly.
The cheapest accurately graded copy that still retains that period feel enough for a display ? Definitely.
