PAUL GONSALVES QUARTET Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick (Rare and super limited 2006 Japanese 8-track remastered CD, the first and only edition of this incredible 1964 recording on compact disc. Just 500 copies of the LP were originally released. This high quality Japanese CD issue reproduces the laminated flipback sleeve artwork, label design and album notes beautifully, complete with Japanese translated booklet and obi-strip. To give some background, Gonsalves arrived in London during the badwinterof 1962-63 to escape the legal wranglings of the US Musicians Union. He recorded this gem of a set under the declaration that it took place in Switzerland to avoid further trouble. Teamed with the Brit-jazz musicians Pat Smythe (piano), Kenny Napper (bass), and Ronnie Stevenson (drums), all firm admirers of Gonsalves' incredible warmth and depth of playing. Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick turned out to be a killer set of hard-bop numbers and one of the greatest jazz recordings of the sixties UCCM-9242)

The latin-tinged title track is dedicated to Gonsalves' friend Jack Sharpe, jazz club owner, taxi driver and all-round legendary London character and 'supervisor' of this very album. Paul Gonsalves was, of course, one of the finest American jazz tenor saxophonists of all-time, arriving in London during the bad winter of 1962-63 to escape the legal wranglings of the American Federation of Musicians and the Musicians Union back home to record this gem of a set! Sinclair Traill formed a crafty stratagem in declaring that the recording took place in Switzerland to avoid any further troubles. What's more, only 500 copies were pressed on the original Vocalion British label, making this one of the most expensive and toughest jazz LPs to ever come out of Britain. Its desirability is only set to increase due to its very scarcity and the fact that the title track was included on Volume Two of the Gilles Peterson compiled Impressed With series, the most recent and authorative compilation on great British jazz rarities, which succeeded, against all odds, in bringing such recordings to light for a new generation of jazz and rare groove fans. Teamed with the British jazz musicians Pat Smythe on piano, bassist Kenny Napper, and drummer Ronnie Stevenson, all firm admirers of Gonsalves incredible warmth and depth of playing, Boom-Jackie-Boom-Chick is a killer set of hard-bop numbers. The production quality is crystal clear, especially for an LP recorded in mono, and the music is both lively and accessible, sounding almost too good to be true!
