TRACKLISTING AND EXTRA INFORMATION
After a long legal battle the master tapes were found to be in a less than desirable state when released from MGM, so each album received an overhaul at the mixing stage by Zappa at UMRK. We're Only In It For The Money & Cruising With Ruben And The Jets feature new backing tracks and should really be considered alternate versions.
This was the first Old Masters box released by Frank, with each album receiving a complete digital overhaul with sometimes contentious results, The replacement of the drum and bass tracks by Chad Wackerman & Arthur Barrow on WOIIFTM & Ruben coming in for particular criticism, although with the passage of time the re-work, which Frank did all the time, sounds less jolting to the ears. The original mixes have since been re-released by the ZFT.
Being the perfectionist he was, Frank could not re-visit Vault tapes without giving them the benefit of some modernisation, be it EQ, mixing or restoring parts that were previously cut out. This was just Frank being Frank.
Notes:
FO! used the original stereo mixes, as confirmed by Joe Travers.
AF also appears to use the original stereo mixes.
WOIIFTM uses a brand new 1984 Remix with some partial re-recording. All original Verve cuts are restored.
LG also appears to use the original stereo mixes.
CWR&TJ got a serious re-work, with the exception of 'Stuff Up The Cracks', which used the original two track mix and is different to the mixes subsequently released on CD. This is a much more radical re-work than Money.
The Mystery Disc contains all previously [officially] unreleased recording and a few single release non-album tracks .
The full size booklet contains complete lyrics, reproductions of period articles and the Freak map, nestling nicely in a unique Donald Roller Wilson sleeve. WOIIFTM includes the sheet of cutouts that complete the Pepper parody. Ruben includes instruction inserts for how to comb and set a Jellyroll & dance steps to Bop Dance. The Mystery Disc is a compilation that was originally exclusive to this box, including Big Leg Emma & Why Don'tcha Do Me Right.
Condition:
Not a lot to say here. The sleeves remain near 'as new' and all vinyl is immaculate, so let's move on.
The box itself shows very little wear at all and is individually numbered on the back. This copy is ZM1-01343.
